Ceramic Coating Maintenance India — What NOT to Do

Many car owners treat getting a ceramic coating as the end of the process. This is the single most common misunderstanding about ceramic coatings — and it leads to premature failure and expensive recoating.

The Critical First 7 Days

  • First 24 hours: keep the car completely dry. Park it indoors or under cover, out of rain and dew, for at least the cure time on the coating's data sheet — often 12–24 hours.
  • Days 1–7: no shampoo washes, no automatic car washes and no other chemicals on the paint. If the car gets rained on after the first day, gently blot it dry with a clean microfibre rather than leaving the water to dry on the panels.
  • Bird droppings: remove them immediately with a damp microfibre — don't leave anything acidic on a coating that is still curing.
  • From day 8: first wash, by hand, with a pH-neutral shampoo. Many coatings keep hardening for a week or two more, so be extra gentle for the first month.

The Ongoing Maintenance Schedule

TaskFrequencyWhy It Matters
pH-neutral hand washEvery 1–2 weeksRemoves surface contamination before it bonds permanently
Iron remover sprayEvery 2–3 monthsDissolves embedded brake dust and industrial fallout
Clay bar / clay mitt treatmentEvery 6 monthsRemoves bonded contamination the coating cannot repel
SiO2 coating booster sprayEvery 3–4 monthsTops up the hydrophobic layer as it naturally degrades

Important: Don't confuse a contaminated coating with a failed coating. In many cases, a thorough decontamination wash brings most of the beading back. Many owners prematurely pay for repolishing when decontamination was all that was needed.

What Kills a Ceramic Coating Prematurely

  • Alkaline shampoos used regularly — gradually dissolve the silica cross-link network
  • Automatic rotary brush car washes — abrade and contaminate the coating surface rapidly
  • Allowing bird droppings to dwell — can etch the coating within hours on a hot summer day
  • Applying any polishing product — even "light" polishes remove the coating

Seasonal Ceramic Coating Maintenance Calendar for India

A coating that gets the right care at the right time of year lasts noticeably longer than one maintained only when problems show. India's seasons put very different demands on it.

February–March: decontaminate and top up before summer

The most important session of the year. With UV climbing from March, do a full iron remover and clay session in the mild weather and apply a fresh SiO2 maintenance spray, so the coating faces the summer at full strength.

April–June: wash early, dry immediately

Bonnets in direct sun can pass 70°C, and water dries almost instantly, leaving concentrated mineral spots. Wash before 8 AM or after sunset, dry straight away with a plush drying towel and check the water beading after each wash. If it drops off before June ends, apply another topper rather than waiting.

Late May–June: top up before the monsoon

Apply a maintenance spray a week or two before the monsoon reaches your city — early June in the south and on the west coast, late June in the north. A coating at full strength keeps mud, road film and rain residue from bonding.

July–September: wash weekly, dry after rain

Wash at least once a week and rinse the lower half after muddy drives. Rain isn't clean water — drops that dry on the paint leave behind dust and pollutants — so dry the car when you can rather than letting it air-dry.

October: the post-monsoon reset

Do a full decontamination — iron remover, tar remover where needed, and clay — then inspect the paint under a strong light for water spots or areas where the coating has stopped beading. Apply a fresh topper and the coating goes into winter performing like new.

Products to Avoid on Ceramic Coated Cars

Several products sold at Indian petrol pumps and car accessory shops actively damage ceramic coatings. Silicone-based spray waxes and tyre dressings that overspray onto paint coat the ceramic surface and reduce its hydrophobic performance. Alkaline car shampoos — anything above pH 8 — strip the ceramic layer incrementally with every wash. Automatic brush car washes inflict micro-scratches that degrade the coating surface clarity. Avoid all three completely to protect your coating investment.

India-Specific Tip

Hard tap water is one of the most common causes of water-spot etching on ceramic-coated cars. Keep a container of RO water (usually under 50 ppm TDS) for the final rinse after every wash. Pour it over all horizontal surfaces — bonnet, roof, boot — before drying. This single habit prevents most water-spot damage.

Quick Challenge

ProtectSolved

Your car was ceramic coated three days ago. It’s dusty, and a bird dropping has landed on the bonnet. What do you do?

The petrol pump nearby has an automatic brush car wash.

  1. Not this one. Brush washes scratch and contaminate coatings at any age, and in the first week the car should not be washed at all.

  2. Right call. No washing in the first week, but bird droppings are acidic and can etch a fresh coating within hours in the heat. When the first week is over, wash by hand with a pH-neutral shampoo.

  3. Not quite. In Indian heat, a bird dropping can start etching the coating within hours. Lift it off gently straight away with a damp microfibre.

Remember: Give a new coating its first week to cure. After that: hand washes with pH-neutral shampoo, and never an automatic brush wash.
